Artist Bio

Gordon Sparks, born on April 26, 1979 is a traditional hand-carved wooden mask maker currently residing in Rough Waters, New Brunswick, Canada. Originally from the traditional, unsurrendered Pabineau First Nation, Sparks embodies the Mi’kmaw people; stories, ceremonies, food and traditional medicine as guidance through the process of creating each sculptural mask. Each piece begins with the sustainable harvest of trees and shares the language of the land, flora, fauna and of the ancestors who walked the path before him. Once trained and mentored by master carver Edward (Ned) Bear, Sparks embodies the value of teaching and extends his practice beyond the studio into the surrounding territories through community outreach. Sparks; partnerships with territory Elders bring community members together to share ceremonies, teachings, and the healing powers of mask medicine.
