HMCS Mermaid was a clunky design, all bow and no stern, and prone to being unbalanced, which was a rare feat for a submersible! A counterweighted stabilizing tail fin was retrofitted a year after her commission, hence the name and the coincidental resemblance to a mermaid's tail.
