SSN Lob

The LOB was designed incorporating an innovation from the KLOBBER: a stick‐grenade–style pin mechanism on the bow that would detonate upon ramming an enemy vessel. It was brutal and straightforward. But life aboard the LOB was even harsher. The crew—deemed expendable—were fed margarine made from coal tar, turning what little sustenance they received into yet another grim reminder of their (and their vessel’s) disposable nature.
