The Imperial command adored a fine, pointy helmet and insisted that the designers of the SM U-27 incorporate this distinctive feature into her conning tower, ensuring that enemy ships would first glimpse the ultimate symbol of Imperial dominance rising from the sea. She was also the first vessel to feature a curly-wurly, jumping line along the bow. Ironically, shortly after commissioning, a cannonball stove straight through her hull and sent her to the bottom.
