The SAXO was commissioned shortly after the end of World War I, as evidenced by her distinctive blunt, helmet-shaped conning tower. Remarkably agile for her time, she featured a rare bow rudder that gave her impressive maneuverability. However, in the absence of a major conflict, rapid advancements in submarine design soon left her outclassed — a relic of innovation that arrived just a little too late.
