HMCS HANDLEBAR When French naval designers learned that the British had named a vessel DALI, the race was on. Determined to outdo their rivals, they set about designing a bow with an even more exaggerated, moustache-like flourish. There was no strategic advantage — only the irresistible urge to one-up the British. The French didn’t need a war to provoke them; sheer disdain and the joy of mockery were motivation enough.
