The submersible GAWDANGA was purchased second-hand from the British Navy and retrofitted with an electric engine to augment her outdated sail. Although quiet, the sail proved far too slow a means of propulsion to be useful in combat and, obviously, could be seen from miles away. The retrofit, however, also proved to be a financial waste as diesel engines became the preferred method of propulsion. Eventually retired as an embarrassing example of government extravagance, she did manage to recoup some of her costs serving for a time as a dry-docked submarine museum near Rimouski.
