The CLEAVER boasted a six‐inch thick steel plate affixed to her bow and featured an unusual wooden conning tower. The heavy plating at the bow demanded numerous design tweaks to maintain balance, but it was persistent leaks in the ill advised wooden tower that ultimately
sealed her fate—she was decommissioned in 1918.
