ARTIST STATEMENT:
As an artist I am driven by a need to be both creative and productive. It is important for me not only to express a strong visual response to the world around me but also to achieve my personal objective to make my work both compelling and beautiful. A focus on strong design underpins my work and I especially like to explore the beauty that exists in unexpected places. The glint of light reflecting off a rock can be as worthy a subject as a magnificent sunset. I work primarily in dry pastel as the layering of pure pigment allows me to create the effects I am looking for. However I also find that combining pastel with relief print gives me the opportunity to expand the scope of my work.
Over time, I have come to realize that the exhilaration of being an artist lies in the time spent at the easel, and, as such, my favourite painting is usually the next one that I plan to make. Even the struggles that you inevitably encounter in capturing the essence of your subject can ultimately be rewarding, as the development of your skill as an artist is just as much a creative act as the paintings you produce.
